A short history of Scottsdale & the Valley of the Sun

Named for its founder
Scottsdale takes its name from Army chaplain Winfield Scott, who bought land here in 1888 and promoted the valley's farming and sunshine. Winfield Place shares his first name.
From farm town to the "West's Most Western Town"
Early Scottsdale grew citrus and cotton along the Arizona Canal. By the 1950s Old Town embraced its cowboy look, and the city incorporated in 1951.
Architecture & the arts
Frank Lloyd Wright built Taliesin West here in 1937. Today Old Town is known for galleries, the Thursday evening ArtWalk and Western Spirit: Scottsdale's Museum of the West.
The Valley of the Sun
Phoenix, Scottsdale, Tempe and Mesa form the Valley of the Sun, with about 300 days of sunshine a year — the reason snowbirds and spring training arrive every winter.
